I love books. I remember my mom teaching me to read the Sunday funnies. I was that kid that was always reading above grade level and my mom, a public school teacher, encouraged me to read anything I was interested in and then we’d talk about what I had read.
When I first heard about the censorship of Bastard Out of Carolina in the Fremont Unified School District I was astonished. Really. I grew up in conservative south Florida. This is a book we would have read in my high school. Here it is the 21st century and books are being banned. In the United States. By Americans. That is just wrong. I decided to do something about it. I decided that I may not be able to change the world in big ways and maybe I can’t combat censorship everywhere. But I can do something when it shows up in my own back yard. The question is, will you help me send Bastard to school? |
